Rye Voters Approve School Budget, New Furnace At Elementary School

RYE, N.Y. -- Voters easily approved the Rye City School District's annual budget on Tuesday as well as a bond issue to install a new furnace at Osborn Elementary School.

In addition to the annual budget, Rye voters approved a bond issue on Tuesday to replace an aging furnace at Osborn Elementary School, which created a "dangerous condition" inside. A $1.2 million bond issue was easily OK'd by residents to replace it.

Rye residents also elected Jennifer Boyle and Katy Keohane Glassberg to the Board of Education, with respective vote totals of 1,270 and 1,206.

The Rye school budget for 2016-17 passed by a unofficial vote of 1,165 to 365, according to RCSD spokeswoman Sarah Derman.

Rye's approved school budget of $85 million is an increase of 2.6 percent over this year's spending plan. Last spring, Rye voters approved a tax cap override for a nearly $75 million tax levy. The property tax levy will rise about 1 percent next year under Tuesday's approved budget.

A bond issue to replace an aging furnace at Osborn School, as reported here by Daily Voice, also easily passed by a vote of 1,224 to 300.

Derman said there were 39 "write-in" candidates‎ on ballots for the Board of Education. Their names will be released early next week when the results are certified by the Westchester County Board of Elections, Derman said.
