RYE, N.Y. -- A day after a suspicious man in a blue Jeep approached a child walking home from Osborn Elementary School, Rye City School District emailed parents and staff disclosing Tuesday's incident.
Titled "Report of Suspicious Incident Yesterday," and released in a 1 p.m. email blast on Wednesday, Rye Superintendent of Schools Frank Alvarez wrote, "A parent reported a suspicious incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon near Osborn School in Rye. A child was walking home from school near Boston Post Road and Osborn Road when a male in a blue Jeep pulled alongside the child and inquired where the child was going. The child ran away and the vehicle left the area. We have been in touch with the Rye Police Department and they have told us they are increasing patrols around the schools beginning this afternoon."
Rye Police Commissioner Michael C. Corcoran Jr. said, "The parent did not file a report. We received the information third party from the school who in turn notified us. We have increased patrols in the area."
Corcoran added, "The description was vague. . . . Possible Hispanic male, driving a blue Jeep. Nothing further."
Asked about the delay in reporting the incident, Sarah Derman, a spokeswoman for Rye City Schools, said, "We don't have any more details on this."
Alvarez added, "When incidents like this are brought to our attention, it is an opportunity for us to review safety rules with our children." He included a list of "Stranger Danger" reminders to use.
"I encourage you to reinforce basic safety precautions with your children on an ongoing basis," Alvarez said.
