Rye Republicans Take to Polls for Primary on Tuesday

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Registered Republicans in New York's newly redrawn 17th Congressional district will take to the polls Tuesday and nominate a candidate to oppose longtime incumbent Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) in this November's Congressional race.

The two candidates up for the Republican nomination are 2010 Congressional GOP candidate Jim Russell and current Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin.

Carvin, a native of Port Chester, currently is a hedge fund manager at Altima Partners and has served as supervisor of the Town of Rye since 2008. Carvin has won the endorsement of many Republican leaders, including GOP Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, GOP Senate candidate Bob Turner and both the Rockland County and Westchester County Republican parties.

Russell, of Hawthorne, previously sought the Republican nomination for the Congressional seat multiple times. In his most recent 2010 campaign, Russell saw support from the Republican Party pulled out from underneath him in September after what the party believed to be racist excerpts from a 2001 essay Russell published in "The Occidental Quarterly" surfaced.

Professionally, Russell has worked as a computer programmer for AT&T. Russell also has a background in historical theology and has taught theology at St. Peter's College.
