Shortly after noon on Nov. 30 last year, there was an altercation at the Mount Vernon High School that spilled out to one of the entrances. Malique Mowatt, now 20, suffered a stab wound in his back during the altercation from Omowale James - who attended an alternative high school in the city - who also suffered a wound of his own - that may have been self-inflicted.

According to the report, Mowatt is now planning to sue the school for inadequate metal detection after his attorney filed a lawsuit late last month asking for medical expenses and compensation after he lost his kidney.

James punctured his victim's kidney during the stabbing before fleeing on foot. He was later reportedly seen on surveillance video stabbing himself before being apprehended. James was eventually tracked down by police at Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle. He was arrested and charged with second-degree assault.

The report states that there were metal detectors at the high school on the day Mowatt was stabbed, but “use of the detectors allegedly ended at an unspecified hour, which allegedly allowed the attacker to enter the building with a weapon.” Mount Vernon school officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday afternoon.
