PELHAM, N.Y. -- NYPD Officer Brendan Cronin, a Yonkers resident, is in custody at the Pelham Village Police Department after allegedly shooting a 47-year-old New Rochelle resident on Tuesday night while off duty, Pelham Village Chief of Police Joseph Benefico said at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, who is in stable condition, was shot six times in the torso, arm and hand while riding as a passenger in a car on his way to his home in New Rochelle, according to Benefico.

Cronin, 27, allegedly opened fire, unprovoked, on the car when it came to a stop at a traffic light at Lincoln and 6th Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The weapon used was a 9mm Glock, which is Cronin's NYPD-issued weapon. Police also recovered 13 shell casings at the scene where the victim was shot, according to Benefico.

The gun was fully unloaded at the time of recovery.

Benefico said it has not been determined if Cronin was intoxicated at the time and he declined to take a breathalyzer test. The New York Times is reporting that the arrested officer was intoxicated at the time, however.

The victim, whose name has not been released, is in stable condition at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital, Benefico said.

Cronin has been charged with first degree assault and is awaiting arraignment.

Officer Ryan Carden attempted to stop Cronin's vehicle, but he did not stop until he reached the intersection of Lincoln and Glenwood Avenue in New Rochelle.

While in pursuit, Cronin allegedly pointed his handgun out the driver's side window.

Once Cronin came to a stop in New Rochelle, Carden exited his vehicle with his weapon drawn and ordered Cronin multiple times to toss the gun and his car keys out of the window. Cronin eventually complied and was placed under arrest, according to Benefico.

There is currently no evidence of motive or that Cronin knew the victim, Benefico said, calling the incident "dangerous and bizarre."

According to multiple reports, New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters Wednesday afternoon that the officer had been drinking.

The matter is being investigated by police in the Village of Pelham as well as by the Internal Affairs Bureau of the New York Police Department.
