WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The White Plains Hospital family is mourning the unexpected death of Dr. Robert Small, who died Tuesday morning after a tragic bicycle accident on Friday, according to Dr. Michael Palumbo, Medical Director and Executive Vice President of White Plains Hospital.

White Plains Hospital staff held a brief memorial service Wednesday morning in the hospital's auditorium.

Dr. Small, a Briarcliff Manor resident, was a well-known orthopedic surgeon and an active member of the medical staff of White Plains Hospital for 32 years, serving as the president of the White Plains Hospital Medical and Dental Staff.  Dr. Small was 63, according to a story in the Journal News.

"His kind heart, boundless energy and generous spirit will be greatly missed," the hospital said in a statement.

Dr. Small was beloved by his patients and held in the highest regard by his colleagues, Dr. Palumbo said.

"He leaves behind a legacy of outstanding medical care and leadership," Dr. Palumbo said.

Dr. Small received his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopedic Institute.

His wife, Dr. Catherine Small, is a physician at Westchester Medical Center. Funeral arrangements were pending.
