Third Candidate Seeks to Fill Rye Council Vacancy

RYE, N.Y. - Eleven-year Rye resident Jason Mehler has emerged as the third candidate to fill the vacancy left by Rye City Council member Suzanna Keith.

Keith, who resigned from her post via an announcement by Mayor Doug French at the council May 23 meeting, had announced in February that her family would be relocating to Texas in June. At the same meeting, Julie Killian and Charmian Neary announced their candidacies to temporarily replace Keith.

A special election wil be held in November to fill the remaining year in Keith's term and whoever is appointed would have to run if they wanted to retain the seat.

On Tuesday, Mehler emailed the remaining six members of the council a letter of intent announcing his candidacy.

"I would like to immediately step into the position and assist wherever I can most be utilized," Mehler said. "I am fully committed to doing everything possible to fill the position. I am looking forward to solving problems, making positive changes for the future of Rye and working with all members of the council."

Mehler, who has an accounting degree from SUNY Plattsburgh, currently works as an associate broker at Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty and has previously worked in public accounting. In 2011, Mehler was appointed to serve on the Rye Town Park Advisory Committee.

Mehler concluded his letter by stating, "Rye is a great place to live and to raise a family. I would consider it a privilege to serve on the Rye City Council."
