RYE, N.Y. – An estimated 6,828, out of 9,790 Con Edison customers were without power in Rye and the village of Rye Brook Thursday as of 7 p.m., down very slightly from 6,843 Thursday morning, according to outage maps.

Con Edison is still in the public safety phase of post-storm recovery, focusing on hospitals, nursing homes, pump stations and closed roads, according to Rye Mayor Douglas French. By Thursday night, 20 roads in the city have re-opened and 17 remain closed. Once public safety work has finished, the focus will shift to getting power back to schools, which have been closed all week, French said.

The city is advising residents who wish to relocate during the outage to first consider family, friends or commercial lodging. The emergency shelter at Rye Country Day School will remain open Friday, with additional dates to be determined. It will also serve as a recharging center for portable electronic devices during the day and evening. The Rye Free Reading Room also will be open for this use.

More than 150,000 out of 348,198 total customers served by Con Ed in Westchester had no power as of 7 p.m. Thursday, down from more than 180,000 customers Wednesday morning. The company estimates power will be restored to all of Westchester by Nov. 9.

Authorities are asking customers to report outages and downed wires to Con Edison and not through local emergency service lines. Customers can call 800-75-CONED (800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, customers are asked to have their Con Edison account numbers available and report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Customers who report outages will be called by Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available, according to a press release.
