RYE, N.Y. -- Twenty people gathered at the African American Cemetery in Rye to honor a Connecticut regiment that fought in the Civil War.

The 29th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, an all-black troop, has six people buried at the cemetery, located within in the Greenwood Union Cemetery.

The regiment participated in several key battles during the Civil War in Virginia and then returned home after the war.  Most of the volunteers were freed or escaped slaves.

Black soldiers were paid less than white soldiers so the regiment declined to be paid rather than receive less.
