Matthew Small, the son of a Falls Township police detective, is seriously ill after a holiday visit to his family's native Ireland, loved ones say. The 21-year-old became sick on Dec. 31 during a family Christmas trip, and while it first appeared he had a common cold, he's since been placed on a ventilator. First Case Of Monkeypox Confirmed In New Capital Region County
Health officials have confirmed the first case of monkeypox in Rensselaer County. The case involves a county resident who recently traveled out of state, the Rensselaer County Health Department revealed Friday, Sept. 23. No further details on the person’s condition were provided. Health officials were monitoring the resident and helping to ensure their care, the department said. As of Friday, Sept. 23, a total of 3,802 cases of monkeypox had been confirmed across New York, including five in Albany County and one in Schenectady County, according to the state health department. It starts out with symptoms similar to a common cold, but it could cause paralysis. There have reports of 127 cases of a rare polio-like condition affecting children, the Centers for Disease Control said. So far, 62 cases in 22 states have been confirmed of acute flaccid myelitis or AFM, the CDC said. The average age of those diagnosed is 4 years old.
