On Tuesday, the New York Red Bulls selected defender Jordan Scarlett in the third round - 61st overall - of the 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, following a standout career for the Gaels.

The senior center back - who was a three-time all-MAAC Academic Team selection - was invited to multiple combines, including the Redbulls’ last year, and attracted the attention of coaches, scouts and MLS staffs.

A native of the Bronx, where he starred at Columbus High School, Scarlett was an impact player and shutdown defender since he stepped on the Gaels’ pitch in New Rochelle four years ago. He totaled 54 games with seven points, was an all-MAAC selection his senior year and a second-team choice as a junior.

According to Iona College, Scarlett leaves the program having played 1,750 minutes, the 10th highest total in program history.

Iona College head coach James Hamilton - who took from former coach Fernando Barboto during Scarlett's senior year - said his star defender has the makings and pedigree of a professional player on and off the field.

“We’ve always believed Jordan has what it takes to play at the next level. For me, it’s his passion and his drive that give him an edge,” he said. “(Jordan) wants to be the best. There are plenty of talented soccer players out there, but I can’t imagine anyone who wants it more than Jordan, and we wish him the best of luck.”
