Rye's Late Comeback Falls Short in District Final

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Dusty Mion and Owen Hull each stroked a home run in a late-innings comeback bid, but Rye could not recover from a five-run deficit Tuesday, losing the 11-and-under District 20 Little League title to Harrison 9-7 at Gedney Field.

Relief pitcher Scott Lobel struck out five batters over three innings to earn the victory and was relieved by Will Marriott with two outs in the final inning. Marriott struck out Dusty Mion, who had hit a home run for Rye earlier in the game, for the final out.

“He hit a home run off me the last time we played and he has a lot of power,” Marriott said. “We just tried to pitch him outside. I was happy I got him this time.” Harrison, unbeaten in the double-elimination playoff tournament, held off the resilient Rye squad to advance to a July 27 regional playoff tournament in upstate Pine Bush.

Rye lost both of its playoff games to Harrison. Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Rye’s Billy Chabot hit a home run to make the score 2-1 and teammate Andy Bach drove in a run to tie the score. Rye scored again on a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead. Harrison responded by taking advantage of several walks and wild pitches to score four runs in the bottom of top of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
