Rye's Egan Wins Third County Swim Title, Sets Record

RYE, N.Y. – Liam Egan sensed it as he was gliding through the water in the boy’s 14-and-under 100-yard butterfly Wednesday at the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships.

“I knew I was close, but I didn’t think I would get it,” said Egan, 14, a ninth-grader-to-be at Rye High School.

Egan, swimming for Orienta Beach Club, was referring to the event record, which he broke, winning the butterfly with a new standard – 55.91 seconds – in the pool at Playland Amusement Park. He broke the 21-year record of Scott Grayson, who swam this event in 56.16 seconds in 1992.

It was Egan’s third win – he also took the 14-and-under 100-yard freestyle and backstroke – of the championships. Egan is on his way to a second consecutive high-point award for his age group.

Following his preliminary heat, Egan said he took a long rest in preparation for the final.

“I had a good start in the final and that really started the whole thing for me,” Egan said. “I was able to get a nice long turn, stay underwater and not waste any energy.”
