RYE, N.Y. Runners of all ages and skills will take their marks at 10:15 a.m. Sunday when the Rye YMCA hosts its 24th Rye Derby and Healthy Kids Day.
Several world-class athletes as well as local runners are expected to participate in the 5-kilometer and the USA Track & Field sanctioned 5-mile events. Medals will be given to race winners in their age groups and there is a cash purse for the top first-, second- and third-place winners in the 5-mile race.
A morning of active fun is planned at the Rye YMCA for Healthy Kids Day beginning at 10 a.m. and families are invited to gather for active games, jumping castle, live music and barbeque culminating in the family fun run/walk, which is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m.
Last years winner of the 5-mile race was 24-year-old Kumsa Megersa in a time of 24:15. The overall female top finisher was 30-year-old Salome Kosgei in a time of 28:51.
The top Rye female runner was Kristina Dorfman in a time of 31:18 and the top finishers of the 5K race were overall winner Michael Anderson (17:40) and the female winner was Astrid Steinen who ran the race in 20:10. Ryes Mauricio Montiel, 34, placed second overall in 18:50 and also won the spot as top Rye male runner.
Participants are encouraged to register in advance by stopping by the Rye YMCA Member Services at 21 Locust Ave. or visiting www.ryeymca.org .
Registration forms for both races can be downloaded and online registration is available for the 5-mile championship race. The first 600 registered participants receive a Derby T-shirt.
The fee for the 5-mile and 5K race is $25 or $30 on the day of the race. Fees are $20 for the fun run/walk. Race day registration starts at 8 am. Proceeds contribute to teen programming, financial aid for families and community outreach.
