Rye Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss to John Jay

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – Once Matt Ferentini created some space, the John Jay-Cross River attackman was taking it to goal, and the results were what the Indians wanted. Ferentini scored a game-high four goals Saturday, sending John Jay to a 7-5 win over the visiting Rye in a boys lacrosse game.

The Indians are now 3-1 on the season. Ferentini has six goals in the past two games and leads the team with eight goals and 13 points. Frazier Bostwick added two goals, and goalie Christian Davey handled 13 shots.

“I was creating space and when I did this, I was able to swing and make moves off their defenseman,” Ferentini said. “Offensively, we were getting some really good looks, but we were not finishing.

“We played hard and created a lot of turnovers on defense. Even though we felt we didn’t play our A game, we were still able to get the win.”

Ferentini gave John Jay a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Rye (2-2) closed to within one on goals by Jack Hasselman and Jake Concavage 84 seconds apart.

Ferentini restored John Jay’s lead to two goals at the 8:03 mark. Ferentini came out from behind the net, to Rye goalie Peter White’s right, turned and unleashed a shot home.

Rye’s Cal Hynson made the score, 6-4, four minutes into the fourth quarter, but Ferentini answered back with his fourth of the game on another fine individual effort. He came out from behind the net, once again, faked left, spun right and scored.

Ferentini credited the defense of Danny Caiola, Jack Lambert, Matt Lanza and Davey for playing a solid game. Ferentini noted that Davey was filling in for injured starter Thomas Branca.

“Christian came in and played an awesome game,” Ferentini said. “I am really happy for him.”

Concavage had two goals and Greg Stern added a goal and two assists for the Garnets.
