Rye Pool Director Prepares For County Swim Meet

RYE, N.Y. – Connor Dowling is in his first year as co-director of the pool at Coveleigh Club.

As such, he faced the task of preparing the pool Tuesday for the second day of the Westchester County Swim Conference Championships.

Dowling actually started getting the pool ready Monday night and arrived at 6 a.m. Tuesday to continue preparations. The second day of qualifying events began at 9 a.m. and Dowling had much to do.

Especially considering the age range of the competitors.

“Whenever you have a couple of hundred 6- to 8-year-olds, you never really know what’s going to happen,” Dowling said.

Luckily, Dowling had plenty of support.

“I've got a great bunch of (life)guards who really helped me out,” he said. “They've showed me how to do it and get everything situated.”

Dowling and his crew had to set up the lane lines in the pool and ensure the pool was spotlessly clean for the youngsters who would soon dive into the water. They also needed to set up the touch pads from which the swimmers would jump into the pool.

“Those are something else,” Dowling said.

Dowling said the actual event ran smoothly and everyone seemed to have a pleasant time.

How difficult would it be to clean up after hundreds of children?

“I’ll let you know,” Dowling said with a laugh.
