RYE, N.Y. -- Rye holds its destiny in its collective hands, Friday.
The Garnets, who have won three consecutive games after opening the season with three straight losses, need a win over visiting Lakeland in order to qualify for the playoffs. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Nugent Stadium.
Rye is coming off an emotional 17-7 win over archrival Harrison in what is referred to as The Game. Fullback Joe Simolacaj and halfback Jake Meyerson rushed for 126 and 104 yards, respectively. Simolacaj accumulated more than 100 yards in the second half as his sizeable offensive quintet controlled the line of scrimmage.
The defense also had a huge game, limiting the multi-faceted Harrison offense to seven points. Rye stonewalled Harrison on a fourth-and-1 play at the Harrison 44 in the fourth quarter. Rye would score a touchdown on the ensuing possession.
Lakeland is also riding a three-game winning streak. The Hornets have blitzed their opponents during this string, outscoring them, 128-9. Last week, in a 42-0 victory over Roosevelt, Lakeland rushed for 232 yards, led by Nick Marianis 87 yards. The defense recorded four interceptions for its first shutout.
Meyerson and is teammates know this will be a difficult game, especially after the win over Harrison.
We need to keep our mentality up because this team is going to give us a good game like Harrison, Meyerson said. We cant let down against them.
