Rye Offense Erupts in 35-13 Football Win

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. — Rye High School football team's offensive unit approached practice this week with a determined commitment to improve. The group was not pleased following a shut-out loss to Sleepy Hollow last week in a Section 1 Class A game.

“That game bothered us a lot because we feel we were not good on offense,” quarterback Andrew Livingston said. “We knew we had to come back, work harder in practice and improve every day.”

Rye accomplished this with a 35-13 victory over Eastchester in a Section 1 Class A football game Saturday.

The Garnets improved to 2-1 and will host Horace Greeley at 7 p.m. Friday.

Rye led, 21-0, at halftime and extended the lead to 28-0 through three quarters.

“It started with our offensive line today,” said Livingston, who threw a touchdown pass to Jack Hasselman. “They gave me great protection. I was looking to get the ball to our receivers and they were catching the ball.’

Hassleman was Livingston’s prime target in the first half. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Hasselman caught five passes for 62 yards, including the touchdown.

“The Sleepy Hollow game was our wake-up call,” Hassleman said. “We had a couple of captains’ practices during the Jewish holiday because we wanted to turn our season around, so we gave it our all in practice.”

Sophomore Tim DeGraw had touchdown runs of 40 and 6 yards. Senior Jimmy Dugan scored Rye’s opening touchdown and fellow senior Danny Sullivan closed out the scoring.
