Rye Neck Football Falls 28-27 In State Title Game

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An early fourth quarter touchdown and subsequent extra point by Chenango Forks snapped a tie and proved to be the difference as Rye Neck fell 28-27 in the New York State Class C football championship game at the Carrier Dome.

Rye Neck, the lone team from Section 1 (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Rockland counties) to make the state finals this year was making its first state title-game appearance.

The 7-yard run by Isaiah Zimmer and PAT put Chenango Forks, the Section 4 champion, ahead 28-21.

Rye Neck then pulled within one with just over four minutes remaining in regulation on a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Thomas Popolo to Jake Sevean. Rye Neck then went for the 2-point conversion and the lead but Pedro Cueto was stopped shy of the end zone.

Rye Neck wraps up the season at 12-1.
