OLD GREENWICH, Conn. Annmarie Magliocco is a single mom raising three teenage daughters, so the challenge of running last Saturday's first Ironman U.S. Championship New York City was a natural.
An Old Greenwich native with roots in Rye, N.Y., Magliocco ran the Boston Marathon and other long distances before trying a half-Ironman and being pulled in by the challenge of a full triathlon. Saturday's New York Ironman was her fourth after doing two in Lake Placid and another in Brazil.
"New York City was the hardest by far," said Magliocco, 46. "The run was just plain cruel. The swim was easy, but basically every one I know gave the time back on run and then some. Of course, we don't do this because it's easy. We like a challenge."
Magliocco, a stay-at-home mom who describes triathlon training as a "lifestyle," found her work paid off by covering the 2.4-mile swim, 140-mile bike race and 26.2-mile marathon in 11 hours and 54 minutes. That's just about the time it takes to get three teens up in the morning, off to school, home for homework and dinner and in bed for the next day. She placed fifth in her age division of women 45 to 49 and 591st overall in a field of about 2,500 competitors.
"I had many goals for my race as I do with each one," Magliocco said. "And even through the conditions hot humid weather and a tough run I was able to get through the day and check off most off what I set out to do. What I didn't get done is what keeps making me go back for more. It's a lifestyle. I love the training because I have a fun group to train with and am always meeting new people to add to the mix."
Just two days after her swim in the Hudson River, cycling on the New Jersey Palisades and completing a marathon ending in Manhattan, Magliocco was looking to her next challenge.
"Next up is getting my body to feel normal again, and then maybe one more race to end the season. There's always room for improvement."
