RYE, N.Y. – Fourteen-year-old Orienta Beach Club swimmer Liam Egan broke the meet record for the 100-yard freestyle event at the 2012 Westchester County Swim Conference Championships on Thursday.

Egan swam a time of 48.14 seconds at Westchester Country Club to break the old record of 48.97 set in 2001. Egan won the event by more than two full seconds.

The thought of the record was in the back of Egan’s mind throughout the race, particularly after he dove into the pool.

“Off the start, I had a good start, so I knew I had a chance of getting close to the record,” Egan said. “I think if I did a good time I think I should have had it, and that’s what the outcome came, which was good.”

The Rye native felt even more confident during the race.

“It felt right. It wasn’t hurting. It felt like a good swim,” Egan said.

The announcers said soon after the race that Egan had officially broken the record and the soon-to-be ninth-grader at Rye High School breathed “a sigh of relief.”

Egan also swims for Badger Swim Club in Larchmont and will swim for Rye High School.
