PEARL RIVER, N.Y. -- The one team Pearl River did probably not want to face going into the Section 1 Class A Football Championships was Rye.
The third-seeded Garnets are riding a four-game winning streak and playing excellent football as they travel to the Pirates for a first-round game, Thursday, 3:00 p.m. Rye lost its first three games of the season and needed to win out in order to qualify. The Garnets began their streak by beating previously undefeated Horace Greeley and two weeks later, handled archrival Harrison.
Two-way starting lineman and captain Peter Wittwer credits the team with regaining its focus after the difficult start and banding together. Wittwer also cited the move of fellow captain Jake Meyerson from quarterback to halfback as a major factor in Ryes resurgence.
Meyerson gives the Garnets a quick, powerful halfback to compliment bruising fullback Joe Simolacaj. In its last three games, Ryes defense has posted two shutouts and allowed just seven points.
Pearl River, 6-1, suffered its first loss of the season last week, 37-6 to undefeated Bronxville. Pearl River is led by Mike Brophy, who has a team-best 389 yards rushing. The Pirates possess a difference-maker in kicker Connor OSullivan, who has booted eight field goals, including a game-winner against Nyack.
