RYE, N.Y. -- Lauren Dempsey was front and center Saturday at the 55th annual Rye Little League opening-day parade.
The 14-year-old Dempsey, along with Ali Cardino and Molly Herbold, proudly carried the Rye Girls Softball banner, leading the softball teams along the parade route that would conclude on Grainger Field at Disbrow Park.
I was very excited about the parade because it is a fun event, said Dempsey, an eighth-grader at Rye Middle School.
The teams in the baseball and softball divisions engulfed the outfield on Grainger Field.
This was the third year Dempsey had the pleasure of carrying the banner. Dempsey, who played three years of baseball and softball, simultaneously, is in her sixth year of softball. Following opening ceremonies, she was off to join her Thunder teammates as they opened the 2012 season.
Eleven-year-old Owen Hull and his Angels teammates had the good fortune of riding in the parade. The Angels won the majors baseball division last year so they received a ride over the 1.5-mile parade route.
It was really nice and felt good, said Hull, of the ride to the little league field.
Hull, who will turn 12 on April 25, and his Angels teammates were preparing for their game with the White Sox to open the 2012 majors season.
Its nice that we are the first game, said Hull, who said he has been playing in little league since he was six.
