Rye senior Max Twyman, the team’s leading scorer, needs just 15 points to reach 1,000 for his career. The Garnets should not need extra motivation to advance to the opening round, but the chance to reach a milestone could give Twyman an extra push.
The Garnets finished the season with a 9-9 record and suffered two double-digit losses to Byram Hills and a loss to rival Harrison near the end of the schedule. On Feb. 5, Rye barely squeaked out a two-point win over Port Chester, which did not qualify for the playoffs.
Sleepy Hollow ended the season at 7-11 and did not finish on a high note, either. The final game saw the Horsemen beat Irvington by one point in overtime. Before that, Sleepy Hollow posted double-digit losses to Woodlands and Cardinal Spellman.
The Horsemen typically keep opponents below the 50-point threshold. Unfortunately, they don’t often break that barrier themselves, which has resulted in some close, low-scoring losses.
Sleepy Hollow must slow down Twyman to get past Rye and into the opening round. If the 6-foot-5 forward gets close to the 1,000-point mark and has time to reach the milestone, he could become difficult to stop.
