Rye Girls Lacrosse a Win Away From Final Four

ALBANY, N.Y. – Fox Lane and Rye enter their respective New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls lacrosse regional finals off dominant performances.

Rye manhandled Section 9 champion Red Hook, 17-3, behind seven goals from Emma Brinkman. The Garnets will play Section 2’s Albany Academy at 4 p.m. Saturday at The University at Albany, SUNY. It is the first game of a tripleheader.

Fox Lane cruised past Section 9 titlist Saugerties, 19-3, as Sydney Stern scored twice and had seven assists. The Foxes conclude the tripleheader at 8 p.m. against Section 2’s Queensbury.

Victories by Rye and Fox Lane would stamp their tickets to the state final four, which is Friday-Saturday, June 8-9, at SUNY-Cortland.

Albany Academy, the top seed in the Section 2 Championships, will have its hands full against a diverse Rye offense. Even though Brinkman is Rye’s creative and finishing force, the Garnets have numerous options. Tori Virtue, Annie Van Wagenen and Scarlett Sulliman are just a few of Rye’s finishers.

Emma Malicki had a hat trick, Emma Hardy had two goals and two assists, and Emily Downie scored twice in Albany Academy’s sectional-final win.

Fox Lane will have the best player on the field in University of North Carolina-bound Sammy Jo Tracy. However, Queensbury will have to contend with Kailey O’Hagan, Kate Burbank and Stern, who is a master running plays from behind the net. Queensbury’s defense will have to mark Stern, who has 90 assists, closely once she has the ball.

Queensbury is a rookie in the state championships, having won its first sectional title. Emma Morrissey netted four goals in the Section 2 final.
