RYE, N.Y. -- The Rye varsity football team finds itself in a similar situation it faced in the 2011 season.

The Garnets have two regular-season games remaining and must win out if they want to qualify for the Section 1 Class A football championships.

Rye will take the first step toward qualifying when it plays at Tappan Zee at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Garnets had won two consecutive games, improving to 3-1, before a 38-21 loss to John Jay-Cross River in week five. A loss to Tappan Zee would force Rye to beat archrival Harrison in the regular-season finale.

Last year, Rye closed out the regular season with four consecutive wins, including a victory in “The Game” over Harrison.
