Rye Country Day Football Shocks Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Rye Country Day School's second week playing against top public school competition went better than its first as the visiting Wildcats stunned former state champion Bronxville, 22-7, at Bronxville High School.

The Wildcats, now 1-1 after losing 18-0 on opening day to another former state chamspion Tuckahoe, rebounded Saturday to stop the Broncos, who fell to 1-2.

Rye Country Day's quarterback Raishaun McGhee completed 14 of 21 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed 21 times for 135 yards in a super performance.

"This was a big game for us after losing our season opener to Tukahoe," McGhee said. "It was 0-0 at halftime, but we turned it up in the second half and were able to come out with the win. Tyler Fernandez had a great game and so did wide receiver James McPhail."

Wildcats' running back Tyler Fernandez had 16 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown and caught nine passes for 90 yards and another touchdown. Fernandez scored the game's first touchdown to snap a 0-0 tie in the seocnd quarter.

McGhee said the loss of senior lineman Henry Heller could have been a big factor but the Wildcats young offensive gave the team a strong effort.

"This win means a lot to the program," McGhee said. "A lot of critics thought that we couldn't hang with Section 1 teams (public school) like Bronxville, but we were able to prove them wrong today. Next week, we have Roosevelt and we are going to work hard and get better in practice in order to execute against them."

Rye Country Day School visits Roosevelt-Yonkers at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
