RYE BROOK, N.Y. – Carmela Snick and Robert Bertolacci quickly flipped burgers and roasted hot dogs Saturday in preparation for the hundreds of Rye Brook Little Leaguers, family and friends who marched from Ridge Hill School to John Errigo Field to mark the league’s opening day.
“I’ve been doing this for a lot of years,” Snick said as she wrapped the cooked burgers about 30 minutes before the parade arrived. “I’m a longtime volunteer. This is a great Little League and we know the kids are going to enjoy the great weather and the parade. They’ll be here before we know it.”
A short time later, a colorful band of young softball players climbed the last long hill to Errigo Field, where the refreshments waited. Rye Brook police, who sponsor the Police Benevolent Association squad, led the procession and manned the field while the players enjoyed the first official day of the season.
Upon arrival at the field, coaches hung the individual team banners along the outfield fence as families enjoyed the afternoon and one scheduled game.
