Rye Advances, Rye Neck Falls In Section 1 Playoffs

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Woodlands upset Rye Neck in the Section 1 Class C football championship game Saturday, Nov. 1, to highlight a busy weekend of playoff action.

Woodlands (4-4), which lost to Rye Neck earlier in the season, completed an unlikely run the Section 1 title with a 28-20 victory on Saturday. Jonathan Stewart rushed for two touchdowns for Woodlands. Dom Brescia rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown for Rye Neck.

That was not the only upset in the Section 1 playoffs. In Class AA, Arlington (8-1) edged New Rochelle, 23-20, in a semifinal contest. Arlington will meet John Jay for the Class AA title Saturday, Nov. 8, at Mahopac High School. John Jay advanced with a 34-33 overtime win over Mamaroneck on Friday night, Oct. 31.

In Class A, Rye and Yorktown advanced to the Section 1 title game. Rye posted a 21-19 win over Somers, while Yorktown blitzed Sleepy Hollow, 47-12, Nick Santavicca rushed for 215 yards and four TDs for Yorktown, which meets Rye for the title on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. at Mahopac High School.

Archbishop Stepinac (9-0), the state’s No. 2 ranked team by MaxPreps, crushed Monsignor Farrell, 49-0. Stepinac rushed for 337 yards, and five players ran for touchdowns.

Iona Prep (7-2) finished its regular season with a 39-22 win over Chaminade. Robert Madison passed for 225 yards and three touchdowns, and Shane Martin rushed for 206 yards and three TDs. New Rochelle is ranked No. 12 in the latest state rankings by MaxPreps.

In Class A, Yorktown jumped up to fourth in the MaxPreps’ rankings, while Rye is ranked seventh, and Somes is ranked 10th.
