CARMEL, N.Y. -- Mahopac Schools Interim Superintendent Brian Monahan stated in a community email that "racially charged language" was reported at a recent boys varsity basketball game versus Carmel.

"The district has taken steps to initially address the situation," Monahan stated. "We are working with officials at Carmel to fully investigate this allegation."

Monahan said the report was that the language "was directed to a member of the Carmel team." Monahan did not say whom is responsible for the language, nor did he state the races of the people involved in the Jan. 7 game played at Carmel.

The superintendent adds that more action will be taken if it is warranted based on the results of the investigation.

"These allegations would be troubling anyplace; I know they are especially troubling to the residents of this community."

Neither Monahan nor Carmel Superintendent James Ryan could be reached for comment.

The alleged basketball incident is the second of its kind involving Mahopac in less than a year. Last season, racist tweets from Mahopac fans relating to a basketball game against Mount Vernon made headlines locally and regionally. Mahopac Coach Kevin Downes resigned last March amid the controversy and subsequently took the same job in Yorktown, Daily Voice previously reported.

The alleged incident also comes with another historical element. The relationship between Carmel and Mahopac High Schools has historically been one of rivalry, which has been reported in local media. For example, in 2005 a melee took place following a basketball game between the two schools, according to a story posted to The Putnam County News and Recorder.

Mahopac and Carmel are scheduled to meet again in varsity boys basketball on Friday, Jan. 23 at Mahopac.
