RYE, N.Y. -- For a third year, friends of Michael Ice are turning his tragic death into a positive for budding student athletes.

The Mike Ice Memorial Basketball Classic begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a two-hour clinic led by high school coaches from Rye, Port Chester and Somers; a former NBA All-Star and college coach; as well as Rye High basketball alumni. The fundraising clinic at Rye High School's gymnasium is open to boys and girls in third through eighth grades.

At 12:30 p.m., former Rye players square off in a full-court, highly competitive alumni game. Finally, the Harrison Huskies face the Rye Garnet varsity squad in a regular season boys basketball game a 3 p.m.

Ice, a 2007 graduate of Rye High School, was killed in February 2012 by a New York City subway train as he walked on the tracks of the Spring Street station. He was 22 years old and a 2011 graduate of the University of Richmond. The financial analyst was an avid surfer and basketball player.

Rye Head Basketball Coach John Aguilar said proceeds from the event are put towards a scholarship for a senior boy on the basketball team each year in Mike Ice's memory.

"The recipient must display all of the qualities that Mike possessed,'' Aguilar said. "A love of the game, the ultimate teammate and a strong academic record."

Joining Aguilar in instructing children at the clinic will be former NBA All-Star and forme Iona College head coach Jeff Ruland, Somers High School head coach Chris DiCintio and Port Chester High head coach Craig Holcomb.

Admission to clinic is $35 and includes a T-shirt. Questions about the clinic or fundraiser can be directed to ryebasketballclinic@gmail.com. Parents also can register their children by email and pay at the clinic.
