Longtime Football Rivalry Brings Crowds To Rye

RYE, N.Y. — "The Game" between long-time football rivals the Rye High Garnets and the Harrison High Huskies drew thousands to Nugent Stadium on Saturday afternoon, complete with tailgate parties, lines down the block, traffic jams and screaming crowds of fans from either side.

By halftime, Harrison was up 14-0.

The Huskies have not won “The Game” in nine years. Last year, the Garnets broke Harrison’s record for consecutive wins in the rivalry’s 81-year history. A Rye victory this year is a must for the 4-2 Garnets if they are to qualify for the Section 1 Class A Football Championships. The Huskies went into the game undefeated this season.

Festivities surrounding the 82nd annual game began at 11 a.m. Saturday with the dedication of the new Ben Bedini Plaza at the stadium in honor of Rye High School’s athletic director and head football coach from 1954 to 1962. Bedini died in 2008.
