Leishman Has Big Game in Rye Loss to New Rochelle

RYE, N.Y. -- Grace Leishman and her Rye teammates were doing everything they could to snatch victory away from New Rochelle, but the Huguenots would not allow it Friday.Amirror Dixon’s running one-hander, off the glass, with 45 seconds remaining lifted New Rochelle to a 44-43 victory over Rye in a first-round game of the 19th annual Rye Rotary Holiday Basketball Classic.New Rochelle will meet Peekskill, which rallied to a 52-47 win over White Plains, in the final, Saturday, at 4 p.m. Rye will play White Plains in the consolation game, at 2 p.m.Dixon led the Huguenots with 14 points and Mary Micelli added 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Danasia Needham led New Rochelle with five steals as the Huguenots press continuously forced Rye turnovers in the second half.New Rochelle led throughout the game, only to have Leishman, who finished with a game-high 27 points and 15 rebounds, convert consecutive offensive follows. This gave Rye a 41-40 lead with 1:26 remaining in the game. Aaliya Hayes restored New Rochelle’s with 1:19 on the clock, only to have Victoria Pacos give Rye a one-point lead, 43-42, 17 seconds later.Rye was playing catch-up throughout the game. The Garnets’ only lead of the game was 41-40. The Garnets had difficulty handling the Huguenots’ press. Even when Rye settled into its’ offense, the aggressive Huguenots were playing the passing lanes and getting their hands on passes.“Our game is our defense and it creates our offense,” Micelli said. “Danasia plays the top of our press. She is really quick and it worked out really well for us .”Micelli also drew the assignment of guarding Leishman, despite yielding a few inches, but she received help.“I wanted to front her and not allow her to get the ball,” Micelli said.Hannah Billingsley finished with nine points and 11 rebounds and Katie Killip had six assists for Rye,
