RYE, N.Y. – Through the first two legs of the boys 13-and-under 200-yard individual medley Tuesday, Spencer LaFata was feeling good and in the lead.
The 13-year-old, swimming for the Coveleigh Club, was moving onto the third leg – the breaststroke. LaFata said the breaststroke is not his speciality, but you would never know it.
He swam a strong breaststroke, and it carried him to the title, in a time of 2 minutes 10.11 seconds, at the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming Association “Counties” Championships at the pool at Playland Amusement Park.
The eighth-grader-to-be at Resurrection Grammar School in Rye reduced his preliminary-heat time by 8.5 seconds.
“I feel I have improved on it tremendously, since I was little, but it is not my specialty,” LaFata said of the breaststroke. “I concentrated on it even more, and I was able to push through it.
“In the winter I am a distance swimmer, so I knew I would be able to bring it home in the free. It feels good to get the win, and I am proud of myself.”
LaFata has now finished in the top three in three events at the county championships. He finished second in the boys 14-and-under 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
