HARRISON, N.Y. -- School of the Holy Child kicked off its 2015 basketball season in a new, state-of-the-art Kelly Gymnasium with a win for the varsity team.
The Gryphons played a very exciting, hard fought contest against last season's state finalist Poly Prep School and walked away with a 36-34 victory.
Festivities in The Kelly Gymnasium began with an Upper School pep rally, including the first, official shot in the gym taken by Hannah Cleary '18.
Harrison Supervisor/Mayor Ronald Belmont and Julian Killian, a City of Rye councilwoman, former school trustee and parent of a Holy Child graduate presented school officials with proclamations.
After a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem performed by Sarah Yearwood ’18 and a ceremonial opening tip-off with the Kelly family, the Gryphons played an outstanding game of basketball.
"It was a wonderful day for the Holy Child community and a terrific celebration of The Kelly Gymnasium,'' said Head of School William C. Hambleton.
For four decades, the Kelly’s have been extraordinary supporters of School of the Holy Child – giving their time, treasure and talent extensively to the school, according to Hambleton.
The Kelly Gymnasium has ample space for two basketball and volleyball courts with bleacher seating suitable for tournament play.
"It is a magnificent gym and one of the many gifts the Kellys have extended to Holy Child. We are grateful to Peggy and Al, as well as Holy Child’s friends and benefactors who have put their hearts, minds and strength, as well as their donations into this outstanding facility," Hambleton said in a press statement.
