RYE, N.Y. -- Once the final out was recorded, Kenny Nixon could not contain his enthusiam and neither could his Diamondback teammates, Saturday.
“The first thing I did was throw my glove up in the air and sprinted to mob our pitcher and tackle him,” Nixon said. “After that, you look for your coach and then you wait for your trophy.”
Alexander Ogg was snowed under by fellow Diamondbacks to punctuate a 7-4 win over the defending champion Angels in the Rye Little League Majors’ Baseball title game.
“This feels awesome,” said Nixon, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Rye Middle School. “This is my second championship in Rye Little League with the same coach, John Rogers. We won the intermediate division two years ago.”
Last year, the Diamondbacks were denied a chance at a title with a loss to the Angels in the semifinals.
“We were really excited to have this chance to do this,” Nixon said. “The Angels are a really good team.”
Nixon earned the win, yielding four hits and striking out nine in five innings. Ogg closed it out.
The Diamondbacks scored four runs in the first inning as Nixon doubled in Andrew Rogers and Aidan Anderson. Jack Lynch delivered a two-out, two-run double, chasing home Alex Goldstein and Nixon, who also scored in the third inning.
“That really relaxed me,” said Nixon of the four-run opening inning. “That made me realize I didn’t have to be perfect and it gave me a wider margin if I made a mistake.
“I was throwing strikes and when you throw strikes, good things will happen.”
Lynch later added a run-scoring double in the sixth to finish with three RBI. Andrew Rogers doubled in Griffin Cocari in the second inning and Myles Goldman’s double brought home Nixon in the third. Goldstein had two hits and scored a run.
John Barber singled twice and scored two runs for the Angels. Owen Hull doubled to lead off the fifth and scored on a Brett Egan double.
