Defense Fuels Rye to Section 1 Basketball Win

RYE, N.Y. – In the first half of their Section 1 Class A boys basketball out-bracket game Wednesday, Rye thought Ardsley was getting a little too comfortable.

Even though the 12th-seeded Garnets led by two points at halftime, the 21st-seeded Panthers were still in the game. That would change in the second half.

Rye stretched out its lead spanning the first 12 minutes of the second half and went on to a 52-37 victory on Wednesday.

The Garnets (9-10) will play at fifth-seeded Byram Hills (12-6) in a quarterfinal-round game Friday at 4:30 p.m. Ardsley finishes with a 7-12 record.

Max Twyman led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points and Mike Garofalo added eight points.

“We felt they were getting too comfortable against our zone in the first half,” said Rye center Matt Keough, who finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds. “We came out in the second half and played good, tight man-to-man defense. Once we picked up the intensity – that got the team going.”

Rye played some zone in the first half and with this, Ardsley settled in and drained four 3-pointers. The Panthers did make three 3’s in the second half, but the final outcome had already been decided.

The Garnets led by five points through three – 36-31 – before taking complete command in the fourth quarter. Rye held Ardsley scoreless through the first three minutes and 31 seconds. By that time, Rye increased its cushion to 10, at 41-31. During this stretch, the Panthers missed their first seven shots.

Tommy Foley broke the drought with 4:29 remaining, but then Ardsley went scoreless for the next 2:25.

“Coach calmed us down at halftime,” said Keough of Rye coach Chris DiCintio. “He needed to let us know again what we needed to do to win the game and we knew we would be able to execute it.”
