Celebratory Reception For Rye Scholar-Athletes Set To Play College Sports

RYE, N.Y. -- Twenty-three Rye High School seniors who have committed to playing sports in college were recognized during an after-school reception on Wednesday.

The graduating Garnets strolled out in their prospective college t-shirts and caps, thanking parents, teachers and coaches for their challenges and fond memories in Rye.

The high school stars talked about their daily regimen, which included daily runs, swimming for five hours and waking to row at 4:45 a.m. -- well before sunrise.

Rye Athletic Director Rob Castagna said, "The parent support is paramount."

Hannah Krapes, who will play soccer at Haverford College, said she'll miss "the people, friends and community."

Jim Palmer, who will row at Princeton, recalled the crew team winning its first state championship in 2013, and qualifying for nationals.

Andrew Livingston, who will play football at Brown, said he was grateful to his teammates for voting him team captain as a sophomore.

And one of the Dinowitz twins -- Jonathan and Matthew will be running track at Manhattan College -- recalled setting the high school record in the 4 x 200-meter relay indoors at 1:35.5.

Charlotte Tucci, destined for Duke, remembered her lacrosse coach saying, "Give 110 percent -- and it always does pay off."

Drew Abate, lacrosse at Georgetown; Emily Antinozzi, field hockey at Western New England; Ryan Bird, cross country at Tufts; Julia Davis, crew at Harvard; Tim DeGraw, baseball at Yale; Marco DelliColli, football at Erie Community College; Andrew DeStaebler, swimming at Colby College; Andrew Emanuel, tennis at SUNY Oneonta; Rebecca Fung, sailing at Georgetown; Soya Goto, lacrosse at Susquehanna; Frida Henningsson, golf at Davenport; Jackson Kligerman, wrestling at Bucknell; Alexandros Koutsogeorgas, fencing at Yale; Patrick MacAulay, swimming at Providence College; Brandon Olivier, track & field at Muhlenberg College; Luis Pereda, crew at Marietta College; and Ally Sullivan, crew at Holy Cross.

Before the question-and-answer session wrapped up in the RHS media room, longtime Rye track and field Coach Jim Yedowitz offered this advice: "The biggest drinkers right now are athletes. I can't believe that. You don't have to follow the crowd."
