Cal Hynson Is Rye Athlete Of The Month

RYE, N.Y. – The Rye hockey team returned to the Section 1 Division 2 championship game recently and one of the major reasons in this was the play of junior center Cal Hynson.

Junior Cal Hynson led the Rye hockey team in scoring, with 40 points, as the Garnets played for the Section 1 Division 2 hockey title.

Hynson stepped forward when teammate Michael Benincasa was injured, centering the first line and providing the Garnets a lift.

His play has resulted in Hynson being selected The Rye Daily Voice Fenruary Student-Athlete of the Month.

Hynson, a three-year varsity player, led Rye in scoring in February with eight goals and seven assists. In the Garnets’ three sectional hockey games, Hynson tallied four goals and four assists.

Hynson led the team in scoring with 16 goals and 24 assists. Hynson came into the season with a goal of increasing his assist total from last year.

“I’ve always considered myself more of a playmaker and unselfish player than a goal scorer,” Hynson said. “When you’re getting assists, you’re always getting your teammates involved.”

Hynson centered the second line with wingers Jack O’Brien and Griffen Tuten. Hynson said the trio had great chemistry because they are very good friends. However, once Benincasa was injured, Hynson moved to the first line. It was not something he wanted because it meant his teammate and friend was hurt, but Hynson did not skip a beat.

Even though John Jay-Cross River defeated Rye in the title game, it did not take away from the Garnets’ season.

“We felt we definitely did a lot better than we did the last two years,” Hynson said. “We felt we came together and had a great team and had a great run.”
