Brinkman's Seven Goals Send Rye to Regional Final

KINGSTON, N.Y. – The Rye girls lacrosse team arrived two hours early for its New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C regional semifinal Wednesday and took a different approach to pregame.

The Garnets chose to walk into Kingston and take in the quaint area surrounding Dietz Stadium , site of the game.

“It was really fun and the area is really cute,” senior Emma Brinkman said. “It was a little field trip and it was a good pregame bonding. It made us feel comfortable.”

That would result in bad news for Section 9 champion and Rye opponent Red Hook. Once the Garnets settled into the game, their offense could not be stopped.

Brinkman scored seven goals and added two assists as Rye ran away from Red Hook, 17-3.

Rye (14-5-2) will play the Section 2 titlist, Albany Academy, at 4 p.m. Saturday at The University at Albany, SUNY, in the regional final. The winner advances to the state final four, June 8-9, at SUNY Cortland.

Rye’s last sectional title, in 2006 under coach Dennis Hurlie, resulted in a trip to the state final four.

Tori Virtue, Kelly Bonaventura, Scarlett Sulliman and Charlotte Tucci added two goals apiece. Maddy Kinker made six saves. Kinker and her defensive teammates shut out Red Hook in the second half.

“This is a loose group,” Hurlie said. “I never worry about them being nervous. They are always ready, mature and intelligent girls, and that is from one through 20.”

Tucci and Virtue scored 70 seconds apart to give Rye a 2-0 lead with 22:05 remaining in the first half. Caitlin Swanson would score for Red Hook on a free position at the five-minute mark, making the score, 2-1. That was the closest Red Hook (11-6) would get. The Garnets scored the next four goals, capped off by Brinkman’s first two.

“That gave us added motivation,” Brinkman said of Red Hook's closing to 2-1. “We wanted to shut them down.”

Rye ran its settled offense to precision.

“We were moving the ball really well, found each other with our passes, beat the defenders, and our cuts were great,” Brinkman said.

The defense turned in a solid game, holding Red Hook scoreless for 32:39. Hurlie said at halftime that the team wanted to shut out Red Hook in the second half and not allow any free positions. The Garnets achieved both.

“Our defense was really great, especially with our slides and staying out of shooting space,” Brinkman said.
