The celebration of the new gym was officiated by Cardinal Edward M. Egan, archbishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of New York. Egan knew the Dotys for many years and spoke of their generosity. They were large contributors to the restoration of the Great Dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, as well as Fordham University and the Cardinal John O'Connor Residence for Retired Priests.
"They were a wonderful, wonderful Catholic couple. You couldn't imagine a more loving couple," Egan said. "With this renovated gymnasium, everything is going to come up roses. It will be even greater and better able to help more and more youngsters come closer to the Lord, come closer to their church, come closer to the young people with whom they live, work and play."
Work on the gym is expected to be completed at the end of the summer. A plaque will hang, commemorating Marie and George Doty. The couple were residents of Rye from 1956 until their deaths in 2008 and 2012, respectively. All five of their children attended Resurrection School.
P.J. Schwarz, president of the Resurrection CYO Basketball program, thanked the Doty family for their donation. The Resurrection CYO program is one of the largest in the state, with more than 65 teams.
"I'm so happy to be a part of this, and I can't wait to see you all in the fall when we have this beautiful new gym," Schwarz said. "Resurrection is a very strong community. It's growing, and what we're going to end up with in September is befitting this school."
Bill Doty, son of Marie and George, said that after their parents' deaths, he and his siblings looked for a way to give back to the church and school.
"We are so grateful to have the opportunity to fund this project for Resurrection as a small token of our good fortune to be related to mom and dad, and as a sign of our heartfelt appreciation for you. For all the kindness, friendship and love you so generously gave them."
