Rye YMCA Announces Poster Contest Winners

RYE, N.Y. - The Rye YMCA has announced the winners of its "Distracted Driving/Walking Poster Contest" and out of the 36 Rye High School digital photography students participating in the program, three, Payton Emery, Laura Ann Pacos, and Emma Futamura, were recognized as winners. Emery took first place, with Pacos and Futamura placing second and third, respectively.

“We’re so pleased with the thoughtfulness and creativity that went into every poster,” remarked Rye Y Executive Director Gregg Howells.

Back in April the students were challenged to create posters that depict the hazards of distracted walking and driving.

“One of the goals of the Safe Routes to School Committee is to encourage kids to stay healthy by walking and to stay safe by remaining alert," Howells said. "This contest promotes both.”

The students were judged by a panel of community figures including Police Chief William Connors, Rye Record Publisher and Editor Robin Jovanovich, Rye YMCA Board Member Liz Fitzgerald, Westchester County Planner Charles Sutter, and Howells.

All 36 student posters will be on display at the Rye Free Reading Room starting Friday, Jun. 8 and running through June 30. There will be a reception and awards ceremony at the Rye Free Reading Room on June 12 from 5:30 - 7 p.m..
