Marianne DiSalvo, a first-grade teacher at Rye's Milton School, is the fund-raiser's coordinator.

The fund-raiser kicked off on Monday Jan. 5 and goes through the end of January.

Milton School students have participated in the Saint Jude Math-A-Thon for the past six years. To date, the Milton School has raised close to $40,000 for Saint Jude's Hospital.

Marianne DiSalvo went into each classroom to show the students a short DVD about the hospital and how the Math-A-Thon works. The students recruit sponsors who pledge money based upon the students' completing math problems in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon Funbook, developed by Scholastic. This can be done on-line or with a paper math book which Saint Jude provides.

In three weeks, the students will hand in their donations to DiSalvo and she will order prizes for the children. The event provides a wonderful way for students to improve their math skills while providing the opportunity to help kids just like them.

St. Jude's never sends the children's families a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. All of the funding is due to the generous donations and programs like the Math-A-Thon.
