RYE, N.Y. In the wake of an early June hazing incident, the Rye City School District will hold a code of conduct public hearing at 9 a.m. Monday morning inside the Rye Middle School multipurpose room.
The public hearing is scheduled exactly two weeks to the day from the date when three Rye High School juniors Max Meyerson, Sean Pinson and Tristan Scragg were arraigned in Rye City Court on felony assault and misdemeanor hazing and unlawful imprisonment charges in connection with an incident occurring Friday, June 1.
The district says the hearing is not associated with the alleged June 1 hazing incident and that the code of conduct is being revised to comply with the Dignity for All Students Act. According to a statement released by the district, the purpose of the act is to "to afford all students in public school an environment free of discrimination and harassment."
According to police, the three teens rounded up a group of Rye Middle School eighth-graders and took them to the Marshlands Conservancy. Once there, police say, the teens paddled two victims, one of whom went to the hospital as a result.
Tuesday, the three teens pled not guilty to the misdemeanor hazing and unlawful imprisonment charges. No plea was entered on the felony second degree assault charges. The trio's next scheduled court date is July 24 in Rye City Court.
At Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, board President Laura Slack read a prepared statement addressing hazing in Rye schools.
The deplorable act allegedly perpetrated by a handful of students has not been, is not and never will be behavior endorsed by the board or the district, Slack said.
Slack's comments echoed an earlier statement released by district Superintendent Ed Shine.
