Rye Schools Name New Superintendent

RYE, N.Y. - The Rye City School District announced on Thursday evening that Dr. Frank Alvarez will replace long-time district Superintendent Edward Shine who announced over the summer that he will retire at the end of the current school year.

Alvarez is the current superintendent of schools of Montclair Public Schools in Montclair, N.J, a post he has held for nine years. Previously, Alvarez was superintendent of River Vale Schools and North Caldwell schools in New Jersey.

"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Alvarez to Rye and we are confident that he will be an excellent superintendent for our district," school board President Laura Slack in a statement. "After completing a rigorous superintendent search process, the board unanimously agreed that Dr. Alvarez is highly qualified and is a great match for our educational goals and philosophies in Rye."

Alvarez, who has educated, taught and served in New Jersey for the majority of his life, is eager about the opportunity to come to Rye.

"I'm honored to be given this opportunity," said Dr. Alvarez in a press release. "Rye is one of the nation's premier public school districts and I am committed to helping drive the district to even greater heights."

The district will make the formal appointment at a special meeting of the board on March 27 and Alvarez will assume the office on July 1. The contract between the district and Alvarez is for five years.
