RYE, N.Y. – City schools used moments of silence and lessons and discussions to teach students on the 11th anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks.
Fourth-grade teachers at the Osborn School read the book "Fireboat," then led an activity in which students created paper squares containing poems and illustrations that will be combined into a large quilt. Amy Carman’s class at Osborn discussed the song “Heal the World” and created pictures for a 9/11 tribute.
At Rye Middle School, eighth-grade teacher Francesca Miller used the documentary "Spirit of Volunteerism: 9/11 and Beyond" and a discussion guide to teach students about the outpouring of volunteer activity and support following the attacks.
Another eighth-grade teacher conducted a “teach-in” activity in his social studies classes on the role of diversity in American life.
At Rye High School, all Participation in Government classes discussed 9/11 and its impact on the country.
