Rye Schools Appoint New Assistant Principals

RYE, N.Y. -- The Rye City School District has appointed Joanna Napolitano as the new assistant principal of Midland School and Torrance Walley as the new assistant principal of Osborn School.

Napolitano comes to Rye from the New Rochelle City School District, where she currently teaches fourth grade at William B. Ward Elementary School. She was featured as a "Proud American Hero" in education by the Fox News Network. She has introduced initiatives including a literacy program that integrates reading, writing, spelling and grammar. She has created an "Author's Day" for at-risk students designed to build their confidence, she has created book groups to get students excited about reading, and has focused on integrating art into the classroom.

Napolitano received her Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree from George Washington University, and a Master of Science in Teaching degree from Fordham University. She has taught at the elementary level since 2000.

Walley comes from the Washingtonville Central School District, where he has taught third and fourth grade at Little Britain Elementary School, as well as sixth and seventh grade reading academic intervention services at Washingtonville Middle School. He has also served as a special education/reading teacher assistant at Poughkeepsie City Schools, served as an instructor and course developer for New York State Teacher Centers and has taught literacy classes at the college level.

Walley recently served on Washingtonville's annual Professional Performance Review Plan committee to improve teacher effectiveness. He has coordinated components of a school-wide bullying prevention program, implemented professional development in technology, implement Lego Robotics into the school through a grant he was awarded, and designed an elementary math program. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Cortland in Childhood Education, a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University Teachers College in literacy, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in school leadership from SUNY New Paltz.
