RYE, N.Y. - Rye students can look forward to a bit more time off during the 2013-14 school year, but they may have to attend classes on built-in snow and emergency makeup days if school is closed for bad weather.
The school board approved next year’s school calendar Tuesday. It gives students vacation days and allows room for bad weather days to be made up during the year.
The calendar is as fair as possible, District Superintendent Frank Alvarez said.
“It’s a challenging year with a late start and late ending, but there are periods of really nice breaks for parents, and students and staff as well,” he said.
Students will start classes on Sept. 9 and end on June 26.
Nov. 5 will be used as a makeup day if schools were closed because of bad weather in September or October.
New York state requires students to attend school for 180 days. April 21, May 27, May 23 and June 27 have also been built into the calendar as vacation days unless schools are closed longer than anticipated because of bad weather during the school year.
