RYE, N.Y. -- Eighteen Rye High School students recently were recognized by the Rye City School District Board of Education for their academic excellence.

The first Rye Recognition of Excellence Awards of the 2013?14 school year were presented at the board's Oct. 22 meeting. This awards program was introduced last year as a way to honor and acknowledge some of the district’s outstanding students and share their accomplishments, school officials said.

Superintendent of Schools Frank Alvarez congratulated the 18 students who earned recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program, a competition presented annually when students take the PSAT.

Claudia Hentschel, Olivia Iles and Elliot Meister were named National Merit Semifinalists, a status that goes to 16,000 students in the nation, or approximately 1 percent.

George Bryant, Samantha Carter, Ryan Costa, James Forster, Grant Janart, Daniel Keller, Phoebe Keller, Luke McGinty, Carolan Moses, Elizabeth Reynolds and Sarah Schreib were distinguished as National Merit Commended Students, an honor given to 34,000 students nationwide, or a little more than 2 percent.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program was established in 1964 to provide recognition for Black American students. Hannah Billingsley earned this distinction.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino students. Evan Miranda, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Sebastian Saavedra are among approximately 5,000 recipients of this honor out of more than 200,000 who were eligible.
