A message on the school district’s website said that the Board of Education and administration were disappointed: "Our research concluded that basic infrastructure needs, growing enrollment of our district and commitment to contemporary instructional environments demanded a comprehensive facilities approach," the message read. "However, we respect our community’s reaction of the project, and will consider other options to meet these challenges in the coming months."
All three of Rye Beck's school buildings and the athletic facility would have undergone improvements, including new roofs, an upgraded gymnasium and expanded kitchen space at the F.E. Bellows Elementary School cafeteria. Also, the school district proposed renovating the media centers at Bellows as well as Daniel Warren Elementary School. The project included adding a collaborative science center at the middle and high school, which would have been two stories tall with eight new classrooms.
More than 13.5 percent of the Rye Neck project was expected to be financed with state — nearly $5 million.
